Hygienic Knobs
Our hygienic knob range
VAYTRON hygienic design knobs are clamping and adjustment knobs built for food, beverage and pharmaceutical equipment that is cleaned in place and washed down under pressure. They are machined from AISI 316L (1.4404) or 304 (1.4301) stainless steel, finished to Ra < 0.8 µm, sealed with a detectable blue FDA-compliant ring, and designed to meet EHEDG and 3-A Sanitary principles. Our current line is the K071HD hygienic star knob — five sizes, both stainless grades, and two surface finishes.
What a hygienic design knob does, and why a standard knob is not enough
On a machine that handles open food or sterile product, every knob is a potential contamination point. A standard machine knob — moulded plastic, an open tapped hole, sharp internal corners and an exposed gap where it meets the panel — gives water, product residue and cleaning chemicals somewhere to collect. These "dead zones" are exactly what hygienic auditors look for, and they are almost impossible to clean reliably.
A hygienic design knob closes those traps. The internal thread is blind (closed at the top), so liquid cannot pass through into the equipment. A blue seal closes the gap between the knob and the mounting surface, so nothing collects underneath. The body is rounded with no sharp corners, and every functional surface is polished to Ra < 0.8 µm so residue and bacteria have nothing to cling to. The result drains, cleans in place, survives high-pressure washdown without moisture ingress, and supports your HACCP and EHEDG programme instead of undermining it.
Certifications and standards, and what each one means
- 3-A Sanitary — designed to 3-A Sanitary principles for cleanability and material safety in dairy, food and beverage processing.
- EHEDG-aligned design — geometry follows European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group principles: no dead zones, drainable surfaces, sealed interfaces.
- FDA-compliant seals — the sealing ring is blue HNBR or VMQ silicone, both FDA-compliant for food contact and coloured blue so any fragment is detectable by inspectors and optical sensors.
- Ra < 0.8 µm surface finish — every functional surface is polished below 0.8 µm to resist microbial adhesion and clean easily; choose Blank or Mirror Polish, both rated Ra < 0.8 µm.
- 316L / 304 stainless steel — corrosion- and chemical-resistant grades for washdown service.
Choose the right size, material and finish
- Size — five body diameters from Ø27 to Ø65 mm, with metric blind threads from M5 to M12. Pick the diameter for the grip and torque the operator needs, and the thread to match your stud or shaft.
- Material — 316L (1.4404) is the default for aggressive washdown, chlorides, brines and acidic cleaning agents; 304 (1.4301) is a lower-cost option for lighter-duty or less corrosive environments.
- Seal — blue HNBR suits general food and washdown service; blue VMQ silicone is available where your media or temperature range calls for it. Both are FDA-compliant and detectable.
- Finish — Blank is the standard machined hygienic surface; Mirror Polish gives a brighter, easier-to-wipe surface for the most demanding cleaning regimes. Both meet Ra < 0.8 µm.

Where they are used
Hygienic star knobs clamp, adjust and secure guards, covers, change-parts, gates, doors and adjustable stops across hygienic machinery: dairy and beverage processing, meat and poultry lines, bakery and confectionery, pharmaceutical and biotech production, filling and packaging machines, and any cleanroom or washdown zone where the equipment is cleaned in place.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hygienic design knob and a standard machine knob?
A hygienic knob has a blind (closed) thread, a sealed knob-to-surface interface, rounded geometry and Ra < 0.8 µm surfaces, so it has no dead zones for residue or bacteria and withstands high-pressure washdown. A standard knob's open thread, sharp corners and unsealed gap trap product and water.
Should I choose 316L or 304?
Choose 316L (1.4404) for aggressive washdown, chlorides, brines and acidic cleaners — typical of open-food and pharma lines. 304 (1.4301) is a lower-cost option for drier or less corrosive duty. Both grades are available across all five sizes.
What thread sizes are available?
Metric blind threads M5, M6, M8, M10 and M12, matched to body diameters Ø27 to Ø65 mm. Other threads and custom dimensions are available on request.
Are the knobs 3-A and EHEDG compliant?
They are designed to 3-A Sanitary and EHEDG principles, with FDA-compliant blue seals and Ra < 0.8 µm surfaces. Documentation is available on request.
What does the blue seal do?
It seals the gap between the knob and the mounting surface so moisture and cleaning agents cannot enter the thread or housing, and its blue colour makes any fragment detectable by inspectors and optical sensors. It is FDA-compliant HNBR or VMQ silicone.
