Hygienic Cam Latches
Our hygienic cam latch range
VAYTRON hygienic cam latches are quarter-turn stainless steel latches for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and washdown equipment. A 90° turn draws the cam tongue tight behind the panel; rounded, crevice-free bodies finished to Ra < 0.8 µm and high-visibility blue FDA-compliant seals keep the closure clean, drainable and washdown-ready. Our range covers a 316L flagship (the CL-PR) .
What a hygienic cam latch does, and why a standard latch is not enough
On hygienic machinery, every door latch is a potential contamination point. A standard industrial cam latch — sharp transitions, exposed threads and an unsealed gap behind the panel — traps product residue, water and cleaning chemicals, and cannot be cleaned reliably during washdown. These "dead zones" are exactly what hygiene auditors look for.
A hygienic cam latch closes those traps. A quarter (90°) turn rotates the cam behind the panel and draws the door tight against its gasket; sealing rings above and below the pin keep moisture and cleaning agents out of the mechanism, so there is no metal-to-metal contact, the action stays quiet and wear is low. The rounded, crevice-free body has Ra < 0.8 µm surfaces, drains fully and supports clean-in-place (CIP) washdown without moisture ingress.
Standards and certifications, and what each one means
Hygienic latch buyers shortlist on standards. We state honestly which applies to which model — we do not blanket-claim ratings a product does not carry.
| Standard | What it means | CL-PR (316L) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-A Sanitary | Cleanability & material safety for dairy, food & beverage | Designed to | |
| EHEDG (design principles) | No dead zones, drainable surfaces, sealed interfaces | Designed to | |
| EN 1672-2 / ISO 14159 / Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC | Food-machinery & machine hygiene design basis | Designed in line with | |
| FDA seals (blue H-NBR + silicone) | Food-contact compliant; blue colour is detectable | Yes | |
| Ra < 0.8 µm surface | Resists microbial adhesion, cleans easily | Yes | |

Choose the right cam latch
- Material — the 316L (CL-PR) is the flagship for aggressive washdown, chlorides, brines and acidic cleaners; the SUS304 (SS304) is a lower-cost option for less corrosive or cost-sensitive hygienic duty. See 304 vs 316L.
- Drive / tool head — the SS304 offers Type PR, Type TR and Type SQ drives; match the drive to your line tooling, key standard and access control.
- Cam offset / grip (BH) — choose the cam offset for the gap between the latch face and the frame behind the panel: SS304 covers BH 2 to 45 mm; CL-PR covers BH 0 to 42 mm.
- Seal & temperature — both use blue, FDA-compliant H-NBR and VMQ silicone seals (detectable by colour). On the SS304 the outer H-NBR ring is rated -25 to +150 °C and the inner VMQ silicone ring -60 to +200 °C.
- Finish — a crevice-free, Ra < 0.8 µm machined hygienic surface throughout.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose the 316L (CL-PR) or the SUS304 (SS304)?
Choose the 316L CL-PR for aggressive washdown, chlorides, brines and acidic cleaners typical of open-food and pharma lines; the SUS304 SS304 is a lower-cost option for drier or less corrosive hygienic duty.
Is there an IP rating?
The CL-PR is rated IP69K / NEMA 4X for close-range high-pressure washdown. The SS304 is a dual-seal waterproof/dustproof washdown design; a formal IP figure is not published — ask us for test data if your specification requires a rated value.
Which drive should I use — PR, TR or SQ?
Choose the drive that matches your line tooling and key standard across the plant, and your access-control or anti-tamper needs.
How do I pick the cam offset (BH)?
Match the cam offset to the gap between the latch face and the frame behind the panel. Tell us your panel thickness and grip and we will recommend a value.
Are they 3-A and EHEDG compliant?
Both are designed to 3-A sanitary principles with FDA-compliant materials; the CL-PR is additionally designed to EHEDG principles. Documentation is available on request.
Can you customise or supply OEM?
Yes — we adapt drive type, cam offset, finish and marking to your enclosure, with MTR traceability and FDA sealing documentation for your audits.
Need a recommendation? Tell us your panel thickness, grip and washdown requirements and we will recommend a part number and drive — or request a quote with full 3-A / FDA documentation. Contact info@vaytron.com.
